  • 1 April 2014 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has today marked the first anniversary of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act (LASPO) by launching a major research project on its impact, starting with a survey of the family and civil Bar, costs lawyers, clerks and practice managers.

  • 27 March 2014 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has welcomed today’s announcement by the Ministry of Justice of revised plans for criminal advocacy including deferring implementation of any cuts in the Advocates Graduated Fee Scheme (AGFS) for at least a year. The announcement follows months of mounting concern among the legal profession and beyond about the effects of the Government’s proposed cuts to legal aid for Crown Court advocacy on access to justice and on the provision of legal representation by suitably skilled and experienced advocates.

  • 20 March 2014 - Nicholas Lavender QC, the Chairman of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, will lead a delegation of barristers on a business development mission to Brazil, from 22 to 28 March.

  • 18 March 2014 - The Citizenship Foundation, in partnership with the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, Scotland’s Faculty of Advocates, the Bar Library of Northern Ireland, the four Inns of Court and the six Circuits of England and Wales, are making final preparations for the 23rd annual final of the Bar National Mock Trial Competition on Saturday 22 March at Cardiff Crown Court.

As we face a number of challenges, I never fail to be impressed by the sense of unity across the profession, who are determined speak out for what we believe in. I for one have no intention to deviate from that course.
