An Introduction to Bar Council's Equality and Diversity Activity

The Bar Council has a strategic aim 'to promote equality and diversity across the
Bar' and seeks to create 'a profession representative of all, for all'

Our objectives can be summarised as follows:

  • Widen Access (Getting In)

  • Improve Retention (Staying On)

  • Support Progression (Getting On)

Delivered via Information, Training, Advice and Action.

Our Equality and Diversity Strategy (2014-17) is available here.

Evaluation of progress

Published equality data serves as an evidence base against which we regularly review our progress.

In addition to the data reports we publish to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty, we also publish:

  • Bar Barometer

  • An annual survey on barristers leaving or changing practice status (Exit Survey); and

  • A biennial survey of barristers' working lives

Activity

We publish an action plan showing our objectives, activities, milestones and timescales.

Equality impact analysis

The Bar Council conducts equality analysis on all new policies.
